The Santa Barbara Endurance Race™ (SBER™) is the culmination of 3-1/2 years' commitment to create an enduring 100-mile trail race event in the internationally recognized American Riviera coastal community of Santa Barbara, California. In addition, this event should provide financial and volunteer-related support for the Los Padres Forest Association.
During our initial quest to create a challenging, 'must-do' trail race in the Santa Barbara backcountry, we encountered some resistance from local environmental groups, and were only able to get 38 miles of the original DRTE 100 course approved. Having run out of time to get the necessary permits, we utilized most of this section to create the Blue Canyon Trail Race™ (BCTR) in June 2009, which had race distances of 50K, 50M and 100K.
After that first successful BCTR™, we realized the advantage of an out-and-back course over the original plan, which had been a 100-mile loop course. Over the next year, then, we researched other possibilities for the 2010 DRTE 100 course, and continued the BCTR for a second year, adding shorter race options of 15K and 25K, in order to appeal to both novice and non-ultra trail runners.
Although the inaugural DRTE 100 Trail run was scheduled for October 2010, extenuating circumstances forced a change to April 2011, creating some minor challenges with regards to the conditions of the Santa Ynez River (and the safety in crossing it) at that time of year. We ultimately opted to add an additional 19-mile out-and-back section to the existing BCTR 100K course to create the inaugural Santa Barbara Endurance Race.
Earn Your Return™ is an apt moniker for the Santa Barbara Endurance Race™. The course traverses an extremely challenging out-and-back route with large gains and losses in elevation, as well as brutal technical sections of single-track. There are distances which appeal to the veteran ultrarunner (50K, 50M, 100K, 100M & 100M 3-person relay) and trail running novices (15K & 25K) alike.
The SBER™ course is painstakingly laid out to meet the strict criteria of the Santa Barbara District of the Los Padres National Forest Service. The area in which the race is held is predominantly open to the public and a Multi-Use district, yet there are numerous biological, geological and culturally sensitive areas that must be preserved and protected. Our goal is to continue to meet the highest of standards so that our event can occur on an annual basis.
Late April is a wonderful time for this event. This region of California really comes alive in mid-spring, with beautiful blue-green Chaparral, wildflower blooms and tall green Potrero grass. The weather is typically mild during the day and cool in the evening. Even if there is an unusual hot spell, there are numerous flowing creeks with water to keep you cool.
The highest elevation point of the course is just over 6000' and on one of the tallest mountains in the Santa Barbara region. Old Man Mountain will treat 100-mile entrants to majestic views of downtown Santa Barbara, the Pacific Ocean and the Channel Islands.
All events are hosted by the Rancho Oso Guest Ranch, just 30 minutes from downtown Santa Barbara. This exceptional facility has cabin accommodations, campsites, RV/trailer hookups, two large pools and a Jacuzzi. Runners' friends, family and crew can enjoy these facilities, as well as partake in multiple outdoor activities during and after the races.
